Took off oil tank today,

Took off oil tank today, crimped the chain oiler take off and brazed it up. It was more of a nuisance than anything else.

Anyone else do away with theirs?

Not a Commando, but I find the chain oiler works really well, with sufficient oil mist to keep the chain rarely requiring oiling, whilst not over-doing the job.

In what way is it a nuisance?

On the Commando the regulator does not regulate, its either all or nothing and the all results in oil on the rear tyre. I put a bolt in a short length of tube and then fit that to the oil tank outlet to block it off, its easily removed but oil tight.

Never had a bike with a chain oiler so it won't be missed at all. Like you say, there was oil everywhere.

Not much hassle to lube the chain, and it means I've a chance to eye everything on the rear while I'm at it.

Only bought mine in September and was happily riding it,washing it,lubing chain and repeat.I then read about auto oiling of chain and thought it wasn't happening!.

Now parked up for winter gives me chance to do a bit of servicing and generally looking over and getting to know bike (my 1st old brit) a bit better and i have discovered that exactly as you describe has been done to mine too! Happy with this and to keep on manually oiling the chain.

Original fitment Chain oiler! Complete waste of time, a good way of spraying oil all over the rear end but useless for its intended purpose. I crimped my feed pipe and use chain wax instead. While your at it remove the silly power take off Jack and blank the wires of!

I have fitted 2 power points to my 99.  Means I can  pump up tyres, power a satnav ,charge a phone or computer,, heat my jacket, drive the chain oiler,  power fairy lights for the tent. The dissy/coil ignition will still fire up with a flat battery helped by the 2MC  if needed.
