Model 7 plunger rear mud guard.

Forums

Hello,

Its a 1950 Model 7 plunger and restoration is  coming along slowly and I purchased as a basket case so unsure of some fittings process. Can't find a manual that shows details for fitting for rear mud guard, oil tank etc. etc

1) On rear mudguard smaller section wondering how it is mounted to the frame? Is is best to drill holes in frame cross tubes and bolt the fender directly to the frame with washers or use some form of C clamp?

2) Where/how do oil tank and tool box fit onto the frame.

Any guidance and/or photos would be very much appreciated.

I'm sure that the fittings for the Model 7 rear mudguard is the same as the ES2 for that year, someone will correct me if not. Attached is a pic from my parts list which could shed some light.

If so, that list is readily available, probably on this website's spares list.

Thanks for that Adam,

Yes ES2 and Model 7 rigid/plunger frames are identical.

Pic shows a single bolt & nut fastened to the frame with a hole drilled in each of the two frame cross tubes.

For future reference this site below costs a quid to register and has a wealth of Shop & Parts Manuals. Strangely  the ES2 manuals don't include the pic you sent me.

(1952) has a hole in each of the 2 cross tubes. It needs a spacer approximately 3/4" thick between the bottom cross tube and the mudguard to get the correct relationship to the tyre (3.25" section in my case) - number 54 in the pic.

Here are some photos of my 1950 plunger ES2 .

The removable section of the rear mudguard fastens to the large section with two bolts - these can be seen in the photo above the two of which also pass through the the license plate/tail lamp holder. The bottom end of small section bolts to mudguard stay . Large section bolts to lifting handle/ stay , also through cross tube by lower seat springs. This bolt passes through an L bracket for top of oil tank and a spacer for fender.

The bottom of the oil tank has a tab which mates up with engine / gearbox plates by gearbox adjuster and is fastened here with two bolts.

The toolbox hangs from upper rear frame member with two bolts through tabs on frame and is secured at it’s bottom with a bolt and spacer through mudguard.

If you need further help / photos I’ll be happy to help.

Ian and Andy,

Thank you very much and  appreciate descriptions and photos very helpful.

I think I can now see my way forward on how to mount and hang the tinware now.

Hi Peter

I have some pictures somewhere of the mountings for the mudguard and oil tank.

Don't drill any holes in the crosstubes. They use "P" clamps.

I'll have a look tomorrow on my other computer for the pictures.

I have followed this discussion but can't add the appropriate photos. If no one else does I will add them in  a few days time.

In summary Model 7 mudguards are totally different to the single cylinder guards.

i )  The short section bolts on in front  of the rear wheel  behind the gearbox with P clamps. The remaining section is one length and takes the number plate/tailight assembly.

ii) Both front and rear guards have a valence of about 1inch. The stays are formed to bolt into this valence. The stays are not straight like the singles and also have a stud as part of the stay to only require a nut to fix to the  guard.

iii) The profile is not a simple C section as with the singles but more stylish and slightly wider.

Sorry to be picky, but Model 7 and ES2 plunger frames are not the same. The most obvious difference is the tank mountings. Model 7 are horizontal holes and the ES2 are vertical.

On my v.early frame there is a lug on the crosstube behind the gearbox for the front section of rear mudguard, this was replaced by a P clamp subsequently.

Here's the picture of the P clamps to fix the rear mudguard short piece to the frame and also the top mount of the oil tank.
