1969 Norton Mercury 650. I have owned this late featherbed twin motorcycle since 1974 but I am now happy for someone else to take it on and ride it regularly. According to the records the bike was one of a batch of several exported to the Eastern Caribbean Commission for use by the Police Force on the island of Grenada. It was re-imported to UK in 1973. Over the years it has had some sensible additions that fit in well with its tidy general appearance. A 69 Commando brake-plate replaced the sls Dominator unit and a Boyer Micro Mk3 ignition unit was fitted when the Lucas advance unit disintegrated. The stainless exhaust pipes were supplied by the NOC Spares section and the silencers are Hemmings replacements. As can been seen in the image the bike is very standard and is in the optional black/silver colour scheme. Fortunately there are no broken fins or stripped threads. The engine and gearbox were both substituted for other units from the same batch during its time in Grenada. They both run sweetly and the bike rides very well. As befits a motorcycle of this age certain cosmetic items are no longer in pristine condition. There are chips and scratches to the stove enamelling in places and the chrome and rims are blemished in places. The cadmium plating has worn somewhat on the spokes and some nuts and bolts. The bike did win a Highly Commended rosette in the 1995 Newark Classic Car and Bike Show. It has completed many Spirit of the Sixties runs as well as The Mendips Circuits in addition to Norton OC Days. For those of you who have never ridden a Mercury there is plenty of data available to read but I should add that as a devotee of the Slimline Dominators the Mercury is the pinnacle of the family. The bottom end is the same as the 750 Commando but with a capacity of 650cc the motor is under-stressed, power delivery is smooth and ride-ability is exceptional. I am looking for offers in the region of £7250 and I recommend viewing and riding the bike before purchase. More images are available through my NOC e-mail address. I am in Frome in Somerset, South of Bath. Howard Robinson 01373451130.
