21 needle, clip, spring and throttle slides are all new AMAL items. I searched around as someone else must have had this problem and sure enough, the NOC website technical section has the following reference: www. nortonownersclub.org/support/technical- support-commando/carburettors-other. This statement is at the end of the thread: 'Experience with Mk.l AMALs ... Secondly the left-hand cylinder misfired, and then cut out; the needle had become tangled in the spring. I assumed it hadn't been seated correctly, refitted it, started the bike and a few yards down the road it happened again; after replacing it again, it happened again. I replaced the clip and needle with items from my old carbs and the bike was fine. There was no obvious visual difference between the old and new components other than the old ones looked old and the new ones looked new. Adrian Draper to Editor 16th. Sep 1998. See illustration below: I initially solved the problem in the way Adrian Draper described, using an old clip, but it got me thinking that someone must have modified the clip or spring, and sure enough, in the NOCShop is the following: SS03 E2_622/067, Clip: Needle retaining : Concentric Carbs - Improved design (below left). The standard AMAL needle clip is shown below right. Shortly after purchasing some of these clips, and not having fitted them, I saw the following post on the NOC Message Forum: www.nortonownersclub.org/noc-chat/ technical4-commando-forum/433297722 and offered to investigate Patrick Bapty's 750 Interstate (fitted with 32mm Concentrics which are standard for the Combat engine).
