It will cover a brief history of protective headwear from the early Greek helmets of 2,000 years ago, through to the early motorcycle helmets of the 20th century. The talk will cover such topics as the major part played in the development of motorcycle helmets by Sir Hugh Cairns, the neurosurgeon who treated T. E. Lawrence following his accident on his Brough Superior and the profound effect his death had on Sir Hugh and the influence his article in the British Medical Journal of 1941 had on his father, which inspired: • improved helmet protection. • the introduction of the first helmet Standard in the world by British Standards in 1951. • the development of helmet testing. • and how material science has improved helmets of the future, including the work being carried out by Imperial College London and the latest development of The venue is: The Stepping Stones, Westhumble St, Dorking, RH5 6BS @ 08:00 p.m. and all members are welcome to attend.
