The talk will cover a brief history of protective headwear from the early Greek helmets of 2000 years ago, through to the early Motorcycle helmets of the 20th century.

The major part played in the development of motorcycle helmets by Sir Hugh Cairns the Neurosurgeon who treated T E Lawrence following his accident on his Brough Superior and the profound effect his death had on Sir Hugh, the influence his article in the BMJ of 1941 had on my Father which inspired him in improving helmet protection.

The introduction of the first helmet Standard in the world by British Standards in 1951 the development of helmet testing and how material Science has improved helmets to the future including the work being carried out by Imperial College London and the latest development of cone head technology (photo below).

There will be a collection of helmets, plus a DVD of helmets being tested.
