Forum Confusion

Posted by robert_davis1 at July 20. 2010

I just replied to Adam's ES2 Tank Mystery question. My answer ended up in the middle of all the other replies, I used the quick reply box at the bottom of the thread. The thing makes no sense at all and is extremely confusing. Is there anyway we can get this sorted and get some common logic into the way the forum works, it's useless as it is....!!!!?????

Bob - Hi

I've made a small change in the Message Board's configuration which will hopefully improve the sorting of threads. Regrettably sorting options are presently somewhat limited but it's hoped these will improve in the next release.

Peter,

there seems to be at least three ways of replying, one reply to the individual box (reply to this) reply at the end of the thread (quick reply) and however it is that gets the red lines happening down the sides. Is there a preferred way of replying so that the thread continues in a logical one after the other layout? I'm presuming that as you say the options are limited, you can't make the last reply come automatically to the top of the list..

Hi Peter,

I replied to a message in the commando section related to gearbox AFTER your email above about sorting threads and my message appears in the middle of the pile.

Was this an 'I am going to do this' or 'I have done this' ?

If the latter then it does not appear to have worked.

Regards

Tony

Obviously agree with Tony and Peter.

Yes, poor old Norton....one of the greatest names in motorcycles and it has probably the web's silliest message board software for it's owners club.

Mind you, Norton did take nearly 40 years to improve their primary chaincase...so there is a connection here!

Ooooooh... now don't take offence anyone, just having a joke..... and there's nothing wrong in trying to improve things. It's not a case of "if it ain’t broke, why fix it, is it?"

Les

PS. I wonder in what position this post will end up in?....here goes...

MESSAGE 7

OH dear.

It still is a lottery as to what position and order a reply will end up in amongst the thread of replies.

I just wonder if we all start the message by showing, as I have done, a MESSAGE NUMBER  as I have done here. So wherever your message appears, the reader can follow the the replies somewhat more easily.

Yes it is DAFT but something has to be done.

All that has to be done by the next person making a post is to label his post with the next incremental  number.

Anyone following this one will show, for example:

MESSAGE 8    at the top of his post and use the B button to highlight it.

So irrespective of where the post finshes...it can be anywhere....we will have an easier time following the thread.

Just an idea of course.

Les H

MESSAGE 8

PLACED IN THE QUICK REPLY AREA , WITH  RECOMMENDATION OF MESSAGE NUMBERING.

not the "reply to this " area which i sometimes use.

there is a lot of good information exchanged  regardless of how it is posted.

the order has never prevented me from enjoying the forum.

regards,

steven phelps

Seems if you use "quick reply" the message sometimes preceeds messages already posted,  "reply to this" places it below the post you are responding to in the thread. makes sense.  the numbers clarify that?

my last on this,

As well as posts not being in chronological order the section listing the current conversations has a column titled "Most recent comment", the entries in this column are almost always not the most recent.

As to coming up with some sort of message numbering system to paste over the cracks - what a complete and utter load of nonsense.

Fix the forum and get the posts in chronological order as they should be and as every other forum on the web operates.

While you're at it allow posting of photos and video directly into the board - not links. This current setup is out of the ark.

Hi Richard. In reply to your comment on the numbering system:  "what a complete and utter load of nonsense." well it has to be taken in context, but yes if we had a decent Forum software set up I would not have made the suggestion.

If you look back, I have made comprehensive suggestions before that one as to how the forum could be improved (Please check out “message board clarity”) I had only one reply and what was so insulting was that the people running this site did not make ONE comment on it even though it took some time for me to write the suggestion up! WHAT a waste of my time!!!

So, faced with the utter diabolical system that ruins sensible conversation on this site, where any post can end up in ANY position, I suggested that if things were to remain as they were, (There has been plenty of time to fix this!!!) a good logical way to achieve some easier way for US, the contributors, to make a thread easier to follow, was to number each one. WE CANNOT change the SYSTEM OURSELVES CAN WE???

SO why is numbering the posts "complete and utter nonsense"?????  I agree it is not perfect but until the site is fixed it WILL help so screaming abuse at a sensible suggestion is rather an indication of your temperament rather than anything else.

I would agree entirely with YOU if this suggestion had come from the people running the site as they should get their fingers out and FIX IT!!!!!!!

I have suggested several times before as have many other members that it should be changed.....but I never saw any post from you saying "Well said...I agree"!!!!

So you have come steaming in, slagging off a suggestion without giving it too much thought which was quite unnecessary and also overlooking the common sense behind it.

I do not have a clue as to where this post will end up in this thread but I hope you do not have too much trouble finding it.

Now if they were all numbered....you would find it in seconds!!!!.    but that luxury would be a "COMPLETE AND UTTER NONSENSE" wouldn't it Richard...LOL.

Until the Forum gets fixed we will just have to suffer it...and yes, I agree it is "Out of the Ark" and we DESERVE far better.

Regards.

Les H

PS...Check out the AJS/Matchless "JAMPOT" web site...now there's a superb example of how it SHOULD be done!

Why doesn't someone just ASK them for the name of their IT company that provides their software and just use them and COPY their one!

Well said Les, I agree. of course you know that because i expierimented with the "numbering system" in an effort to understand posting orders.  i read the forum everyday regardless of how  the order works.

It would be better if links led to the most recent post. Is this possible with the rather limited software being used?

Cheers
