Pre-oil clutch plates?

Posted by Brian Steers at June 25. 2017

Hi there.

I am just fitting new pressure plate and friction plates to my 1972 Commando. Should I soak the friction plates in primary drive oil before fitting, or should they go in dry? My Haynes manual doesn't say, but I always used to do it on my old Triumphs.

Also, any recommendations on the best primary oil to use please?

Many thanks,

Brian

ATF works well In mine.

The clutch plates are designed to run dry with only sufficient oil in the primary chaincase to lubricate the primary chain. I have always used ATF but after some of the chain rollers seperated and on the advice of a friend I am now using 10/40 oil.
