Brake calliper piston seals

Posted by peter_eldridge at August 04. 2017
I have been rebuilding my brake calipers with new pistons and seals, but whatever I try I cannot get the piston in without damaging the seal. Have tried soaking them in brake fluid, rubber grease, stretching etc. But just cannot get the outer piston in without damaging the seal. Everything looks clean, any advice?? Have already damaged about a dozen seals and getting desperate!!!

Peter

I have never had any problems fitting in this order and using red rubber grease or brake fluid if you prefer , I will assume that you have all parts clean and that there are no rough edges on your pistons and that  the inner seal and piston is in place .

Next  fit the outer piston into the Caliper let it go in to the center past the seal grove, next lightly lube the seal and fit into seal groove,  then ease the piston back in to the seal the rounded edge on the back of the piston should ease the seal back into its groove as it is levered back into the outer bore of the caliper.

I live in Ash on the Surrey Hampshire border happy to assist if you are local.

Good luck

Katherine

Yes I damaged three seals before It worked .Still not sure what went wrong.

I had some trouble before properly cleaning out the groove, even a little corrosion will push the seal out of place.

I also used a clamp to apply steady pressure keeping things in line.

Thanks Katherine, I had another go today and managed to get the brake piston in OK. I had been trying to push the piston in from the outside (as per workshop manual!!), but pushing the piston out from the inside worked a treat! Thanks for the tip. Cheers. Pete
