What size quad seal do I need to fix a leaking kick start shaft on my '72 Roadster - and any ideas on the best place to purchase this seal in the UK??

Thanks - Paul.

I bought from Revolution Seals & Bearings on 01923 858385  - their reference number 4-019.

They have a website www.rsb.uk.com

The best way is to machine the outer gearbox cover to take the Mk3 kickstart oil seal, part#06-6145. Andover Norton's supplies all new outer gearbox covers machined for that oil seal. It is part of our policy to improve on the original design whereever possible.

From experience, if you get it machined to MKIII spec. use only the seal from Andover Norton. I was very frustrated having bought two seals, one each from a different supplier, and both were very slightly different to the Andover Norton one which actually worked. They all fitted the gearbox cover, but I found that the actual seal lip varies in its position longitudinally and thus does not seal properly on the kickstart shaft. And yes, both were bought from retailers listed as selling genuine Andover Norton parts.

OK - thanks all for the info.

Web site gremlins are alive and well it would seem.

Regards - Paul.

Iain,

I have followed up your seal recommendation for my 68 Commando.  Do you know if this seal will fit any bike with the AMC gearbox.

Thanks

Harry

Harry

I'm sure it will fit any AMC box -I have fitted quad seals to six or seven boxes with good results.

I put a little sealant in the casing before inserting the quad.

Not so necessary but you can also fit a quad in place of the gearchange o ring - ref Q114.

Thanks again Ian.  I will follow up on the gearchange seal too. I get a smear from there but its cosmetic really compared to the kickstart where it runs out.

The seal company you recommended provides an excellent service and has a minimum order of £5.00 which is good suiting small purchases.
