Help with measurements

Posted by john_cowie at January 05. 2012

Hello,

I am working on a ship and have 2 weeks until I get off.  I have a 1977 Commando Mk111 ES and am wanting to fabricate a bar to install as our American friends call it 'highway pegs' basically footrests for long range touring which attach to the front frame just above the exhaust ports.

Could anyone please measure the circumference of the frame uprights at that position so I can fabricate 2 clamps to hold the bar in place, approximate length of bar would be good too, I can always cut if too long.

Many thanks

Jake

Hi Jake - You could try these from British Cycle in the USA?

Jake,

I have measured the downtube diameter on my Commando and it's exactly 1" when you take off a few thou. for the paint.  That is not from a Mk.lll but I don't think they changed it at all.

You might find a steering damper mounting useful as the means of attaching your bar to the frame.  The lousy photograph attached will give you the idea.  Even if the height did not work out right, you could still use the semi-circular bits and the U-bolts with another base plate.

Be careful, be very, very, careful.

I have seen the front downtubes dimpled in where the "U" of the u-bolts contact the tubes.  There is not a lot of surface contact there and the resulting pressure from the contact points can cause the tube to be bent.  Perhaps, a saddle of some sort under the U would spread the load.
