Cam followers

Can anyone help with a problem with the cam followers on a 1972 750 commando. I have bought a new set but can anyone tell me if there is a right or wrong way to pair them, there are two ways they can be paired, one way with both of the long bevel end edges together and the other with them one at the front edge and one at the back. The set that I have wont fit, they are too tight,I just wonder if I have been sold a missmatched or oversized set.  Billy.

Its in the technical section

Keep in mind to have the bevelled end toward the front upon re-assembly.

If they are tight then you need to relieve the holes to get the correct clearance or get a alternative set by contacting the vendor.

It's normal for them to be a tight fit in a bore that has worn unevenly and lapping them in will help to arrive at a decent clearance which will eliminate the clack-clack follower noise heard on so many Commandos.

I use fine valve grinding paste and an old pushrod to lap the followers into the tunnels. When cleaned off and oiled, they should just be free to drop under their own weight.

As they are machined as a pair they should be fitted as a pair. If you have mixed them up that will not help.

+0.020" followers are available, but unlikely that you have been sent those. Having said that, I was sent the wrong camshaft by a well-known supplier, and fitted it, never thinking it could be wrong. That is engine out and a full strip to correct. I suggest you measure them and see what you have got.

I seem to remember the sets that I bought from AN a few years ago said that they had to be de-burred before use. I then rubbed the mating surfaces lightly on some fine wet & dry abrasive paper on a flat surface until they were a reasonably free fit in the bores.

Hi Ian,  Do you know where I can find the sizes?   Billy.
