Hello everyone,

It seems that my initial posting did not get through, so here it is again.

Can anybody help with with the name of a supplier of the rubber/pvc sealing gaskets for mounting the speedometer/ammeter into the headlamp shell.

The speedometer has a dia of 2.375 inches, the ammeter 1.6 inches.

Regards

Stan

I'm not sure that such a thing exists. I've never come across any on anything I have dismantled. I would suggest using a thin bead of silicone sealant if you are concerned about water ingress, although as the headlamp rim is not sealed to the shell, it wouldn't really achieve much benefit.

The items you refer to do exist! I have them on my Navigator. The material is 1/16 thick and protrudes slightly outside the speedometer bezel. Short of cutting from a sheet of rubber I can only suggest that these may come from the instrument manufacturer rather than Norton. Maybe a scan through speedo suppliers / repairers web sites would thorw something up? My guess would be that they were a poor attempt at sealing and or vibration proofing!

Good luck

Steve

Stanley, the sealing ring for the speedo bezel is important, it keeps water out of the clockwork. It probably keeps the glass in one piece as well, because glass doesnt take kindly to stresses imposed by metal parts. The original was of special section, but a thin section Oring plus silicone would probably do.I would try Draganfly for the ring, they provide a comprehensive service, its a pity there not interested in Nortons.Regards John.

Hi John,

I think you have misunderstood Stanley's question, he is after the ring / gasket that goes around the outside of the speedo and seals to the headlamp shell.

I had the same problem and eventually found a large O ring to fit but I cannot remember where it originally came from, it was just in the 'it may come in useful one day' pile.

Tony

Hello all,

I've used the square section sealing rings from old element type oil filter kits under both my Dommi & Commando clocks, Lena's (er indoors) Navi will get the same treatment when when we get that far.  I'm not sure if anything was fitted as standard but I prefer to have some insulation rather than metal to metal contact. The old filter kits mostly had some spare/alternative sealing rings & I always saved those I didn't use & as they are rubber you can cut them to size & use a spot of super glue to rejoin them. I'm sure it must be possible buy something like them if you don't have any laying around. They are probably a bit too much for the ammeter but there must be some other source of smaller square section rubber that you could use, something that springs to mind is the drive belt from an old cassette player ?

Hope this is of some help or at least gives you some ideas.

  Regards, Tim

Hello Everyone

Thank you all for your contributions.  To update you.  I have been able to find what I believe are original gaskets for the ammeter.  I have also purchased some from an e-bay seller (gk24sailor).  There are simple flat sealing washers without the lip that centralises the gasket in the whole of the headlamp.  I have also purchased similar ones for the speedo.  Additionally, I have found a small U shaped rubber extrusion from which it is possible to produce the gaskets.  Simply fitting the rubber over the edge of hole, cut to length and glue the ends.

Thanks again for all your help.

Stanley.

The ammeters have simple "O" rings and new units should really be supplied with them.  In my 1959 Parts List they are P/No. 523986, which equates to new number 990502 - which are listed as O-rings for Commando headlamp brackets on Norvil's Supercession List! (20p from Andover Norton who list them as revised No.990522). The original speedo sealing ring is P/No. B2/681 - which oddly is new P/No. 064704 according to Norvil.  That part is listed as the Starter Motor O-ring for a Commando!  It costs 38p from Andover Norton, who show it at the drive end plate on their exploded diagram of the starter.

Never use silicone sealant  - it's too messy and unneccessary!

All my bikes' original speedos had a flat rubber washer under the flange - so there you go!

Cheers, Lionel

There is a seller on ebay listing any size o rings up to 400mm on ebay under the seller name  limolarry69

He lists 60mm gaskets (metric conversion from 2.375 inches), with cross section from 1mm to 5mm.

With postage from the USA (where he is based) they are about £2.65 each, he offers a discount of 25% on orders over 5.

I am not recommending him, as I have never bought one, but if anyone wanted to spend the money then it's an option.

Seems odd that no UK based seller is offering them, O rings is O rings surely!!

McMaster-Carr, http://www.mcmaster.com, offer a very wide selection of o-rings.  They are in America, but will ship anywhere.  For EPDM o-rings (Excellent for water/steam), the 3 3/8" ones 1/16 thick will cost you US$ 10.33 for 50, and the 1 1/2" ones 1/16 thick will cost you US$ 11.66 for 100.

Thanks for that eBay item Paul.  I'll get one for my Navi.  Larger versions are what's needed for all Smiths speedos on Dommies too!  Not O-rings.  It's a 'rubber' gasket to seal the speedo flange to the headlamp shell.

Cheers, Lionel
