Gearbox ratchet

Posted by John Pullen-Appleby at August 11. 2017

Hello All,

While looking aty my gearbox bits I found that the small diameter rod in the centre of the gearbox ratchet shaft was snapped at the pint at which one of the circlip groove wascut.  Some one had turned the broken piece round and used it to plug the hole up the middle of the splined gear shaft.  Do see the picture.

I could buy a new small diameter sopindle and press it in. I could replace both the shart that the gearbox seletor plate goes on the smaller diameter bit--or if I bought 2nd had bit I could replace the lot.

The more I think of it however, the more I cannot see what the bit that is broken off actually does apart from block up a hole that is only there because there is a shart to poke up it.

I have seldom seen such a well supported component running as it does in big bushes.  Does anyone know a good reason why I should not just plug the hole in the splined gear shaft (the one the gear pedal goes on).  And then use the truncated shaft--it was all working when I got it  (there was no oil in it true but I cannot see that being an issue).

Any views anybody?

John,

You have a seriously abused gearbox!.  The gear indicator screws on to the end of the broken ratchet shaft spindle.  See items 3 and 4 in the Plate B illustration which you already have. If you are not bothered about this then just plugging the hole (as before) should actually work.  Uli has lots of knowledge about this ratchet shaft.

Hello Parrick,

I see  (I did not have one naturally) but I assumed there must some reason for it going through the gear shaft.  I am happy without one  (gear indicator).

Yes my poor old thing has been through the wars by all accounts.

What is the point of the gear indicator anyway, totally useless imho!

Well you definitely cannot see it when you are riding the bike unless you are a very skilled trick rider.

I think it was just the fashion. Didn't the Triumph Tiger Cub have a little dial on the headlight shell around the same period of time for it's gear indicator ?.
