Splitting Electra Crankcases

Posted by paul_gibbons at March 10. 2011

I am trying to split a pair of Electra crankcases that are prooving stubbon to say the least. I definatly have all the attaching fasteners out including the two inside the top where the barrel fits. They just seem to be very tight on the crankshaft bearings. I have tried heating the cases up around the main bearings and propping the cases on blocks of wood, then knocking the end of the crankshaft, all to no avail. If anyone has any words of wisdom they would be greatfully recieved. Paul Gibbons 01959542650

Hi Paul,

Sorry if this is a silly question but you have taken the bolt out that is in the far left hand corner of the bit behind the timing cover ?

Easy one to miss (I did)

Regards

Tony

Hi Tony

In the words of the great Homer Simpson 'Doh'! As you very kindly point out there are in fact two allen bolts heavily recessed in the timind side recess. Both bolts now out and low and behold they have split. Let this post be a lesson to all light weight owners out there planning an engine rebuild.

I owe you a pint Tony if you are ever down Bromley way!

Regards
