Camshaft sprocket fitting.

Posted by ian_richtsteig at August 10. 2017

On page 111 of P.L. Garrett's manual, when fitting timing sprocket and chains for Models 88, 99 and 650 from 1958, he says to fit a THICK washer to the camshaft and then fit the woodruff key.

I cannot find this washer listed in any of the post 1958 parts books.

The earlier parts books do list a thin washer for the camshaft on the dynamo models to space the fibredrive dynamo gear.

Does anyone know whether there is a washer on the camshaft of the alternator Dominators?

Hello Ian ,  There are no washers on the camshaft any of mine, nor have I ever seen such on alternator type engines.  There is a hard washer that must be fitted before the half-timing pinion goes in place. Regards, Howard

Thanks Howard,

I thought that was the case as I haven't fitted a washer before on any of my alternator bikes but Garrett made me doubt my knowledge.  Yes I always fit the hardened washer before the intermediate gear is fitted.

regards

Hello Unless  this manual is referring to fitting the commando camshaft into a dominator crankcases  where the Commando camshaft has no shoulder  they fitted a trust washer, then this may explain this   good luck yours anna j
