Long Roadholder fork length?
Up to Singles
Am I missing something here? I thought Long Roadholders had the two-part 'external' springs, Main Spring Part No. B2/620 and Buffer Spring Part No. B2/618. The examples I have here measure 9.2" and 1.7" respectively. Alan suggests these became just one spring later on - when did they do that? It must have been from 1950-ish I guess.
Adding together my two springs gives a total length of 10.9". I might have misr-read Karl's figures but he seems to be suggesting 11.78" as standard, so it looks as if these might be sidecar ones as they are closer to his 11.0" figure.

Hi to all- My 1950 ES 2 has one piece mainsprings-I can't say what they measure without disassembly- my Norton spare parts list reprint for 1950 clearly shows two piece springs ( main and short buffer) in the illustration and numbers them J18 for the main and J17 for the buffer. However, when you cross reference this to the parts list itself there is only a mainspring listed - J18 only and this is given part number E2/620. My guess is they changed to single springs for 1950 or thereabout and perhaps changed the prefix from B to E to reflect this change - Richard

I have just rebuilt my forks using two piece springs, as one of the one piece ones that were fitted had fractured into three pieces!
Was that because you couldn't source single springs?
Cheers
Alan
No Alan, it was because the single spring had shattered, and I had never heard of this happening to the two piece springs, although I am sure I will be told different.
