Do i need a 1/4 ball bearing in the end of the clutch push rod for it to operate succesfully.

I also have a 1928 Norton 16H.

I have the original owners manual for the Sturmey Archer  C.S. Type 3 Speed gear box which has photos and exploded diagrams of all components. Would you like me to photograph and email to you?
