valve timing 16h

Posted by steven_woods at December 03. 2016

Hello,

I am building a 16h engine (1937), the engine arrived in a box. The cams, etc do not have timing marks. Does anybody have details of how you set the timing?

Has anyone ever seen a 16H engine with marks on the cam wheels ?

The process is described in the Military 'Maintenance & Instruction Manual'.

It can be downloaded from Rob van den Brink's WD Norton site.

I would post a link but this archaic message board doesn't allow me to copy / paste in Firefox....Google 'WD Norton'

Even if they were marked i would start from scratch, especially as it is currently a kitset. I have had bikes with pin marks on cams which when checked were found to be incorrectly marked.

Thanks for all the replies, i plan to video "setting up the timing" from scratch and write a quick technical brief to go with the video, including the engine running on the bench!. I will post onto u-tube.

I did speak to a very nice gentlemen who had worked with Jimmy Guthie, who explained how he had set the timing up on his kitchen table back before the war!

I also understand that he is still married to the same women!, thanks again all.
