Posted by william_gray at February 04. 2012
Please does anyone know if my Norton ES2 Tank would have been painted or chromed its very close because of nickel at the time.

Date of purchase; 31st August 1951 (left factory) Engine & Frame No 40483. There is no letter F before the number.

And just for anyone out there who might be interested the bike was purchased by P W Riley. Wisbech, New Drove, North Brink, Wisbech,Cambridgeshire.

Regards,

Willie.

Hi William,

From what I have read this shortage was late 1951. Some swing arm bikes like the Model 7 are occasionally seen with painted tanks so the shortage must have gone on to late 52 at the very least perhaps even going into 1953 though it could be that they had a stock of tanks some painted and some chromed and whatever was to hand got fitted.

My ES2 frame is also 51, and it also has no F prefix letter before the 4

Thanks for the reply Jim, When I acquired the bike from my uncle in 1968 it had a painted tank then, so I think I will go with the paint, all evidence points to that.

Regards,

Willie,
