International Rally USA
Up to News and Views
Club members (and anybody else) travelling to the USA will benefit from applying on line for an ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorisation) to assist in travel to the USA. The application is valid for two years and is free at the moment, but will incur a fee of $14 after 8 Sep. So get your skates on and save $14 Google USA travel ESTA and fill in the details. You'll need your passport details (travel details are not mandatory) and print off the Authorisation at the end.
Dave Evans
Bit suprised at Mr Grimmet's comment about the rally in the recent Roadholder "preferably not an Atlas or Commando"
Nice if you've got the choice. If you've got the choice the Commando will probably be the most reliable in your stable. (or maybe not Chris)
Why surprised Dave? Read my words - I said 'preferably'. To reiterate - the vast majority of the Nortons in the USA are Atlas and Commando. People at the rally would be pleased to see some of the older Nortons that we might take for granted and that they never see. The distances involved from the port of entry are not great and it would be good if we could do that.
If you have only a Commando available, then of course take it. As you have pointed out, that would not be a good idea in my case.
OK so now we are 9 months from the International Rally in the USA and not a peep from the club about arrangements. Luckily the Dutch NOC is trying their best to get there, in the absence of a UK arrangement or if you are in the continent you might want to consider this;

Just a couple of minor points from a local (New York) resident: (1) in the U.S. any motorcycle manufactured as a pre 1971 model does not need indicators or a front brake activated brake light; (2) daytime running lights are required on all motorcycles but the constabulary interpret this pretty leniently so that a parking light will usually satisfy them. Just have something shining out from the headlight shell; (3) assuming that the POE for shipped bikes is Newark or Bayonne, New Jersey, the first several miles of roadway en route to the rally site are definitely not vintage bike friendly. In fact they are some of the most congested limited access roads in the world and are filled with a tremendous amount of commercial traffic. A good comparison might be driving out of the port area of Rotterdam; and (4) finally, I am a native of New York City which is just across the border from New Jersey, a state which I find to have the most confusing road system in the world (well maybe the approach to Birmingham for a foreigner is almost as bad). Without a GPS I still can't drive in New Jersey without getting lost which usually means making a wrong turn on to a limited access highway and then driving for ever before being able to retrace your route. Bring good maps and/or a GPS.
