Norman Hyde oil cooler

Posted by Julian Wells at September 13. 2017

Can anyone shed any light on exactly what problem this device is intended to address (cooling oil, obviously, but what in what context? I assume racing, but it would be good to know).

Also, how does it work -- in particular, why four hose connections, and why no finning? Or are we looking at two different fluids exchanging heat in some manner?

Obviously a water cooled oil cooler.

I don't think it's an oil cooler. I have seen these before it is the thermostat for an oil cooler system. Oil from the engine goes in one pipe (inlet) if not to hot it goes out of another (outlet). If however it is hot enough to activate the internal thermostat it leaves by a different pipe to go to the actual oil cooler (cooler feed). From which it will then return to go back into the unit by the last of the pipes (cooler return) and then leave the unit by the same pipe as cool oil (outlet).

I consider buying it but you can buy a new Mocal one for about the same money. Being new it should work correctly and will come with instructions as to which pipes go where. Connecting it incorrectly could possibly stop oil flow all together which would of course be a bad thing.
