Dimensions Manx tank

Posted by john_hall1 at September 22. 2017

Hi,

I need a petrol tank of the Manx variety, for a Slim-line frame, I have used search engines such as Pricecat.co.uk to trawl the Web, for the last 6 months and have been given options from Indian suppliers, but they haven't it seem s got an accessible frame out there to measure!

With Anna, I  have measured both standard Wide-line 1954, and slimline 1962 tanks for width and Length and indeed the Slim-line tank was slightly wider than the Wide-line tank!

However, if I remember rightly, both tanks seem to be about 21 1/2 inches long and I have seen  Manx Wide-line tanks on Ebay boasting a length of 25 inches!  Both my Slim-line frames are elsewhere at the moment, so I was just hoping someone has access to handy guideline for fabrication measurements. I was working on the premise of the tank being 9 inches wide at the rear

I know there are some makers here, but I have heard horrendous stories about delivery times!  I was also thinking of a steel tank initially rather than Aluminiun alloy, any thoughts on that?

Some tank fabricators locally, have suggested that 2mm Aluminium Alloy is too inflexible for vibration and that these so called professionals should be using 1.5 mm Aluminium Alloy plate rather than the 2mm they advertise!

A dealer in India has offered me a petrol tank in raw steel for £295, Shipping @ £65 and plus an award winning Paint job by India's top restorer for £250, plus £18 decals and £55 further postage to & Fro before Despatch, that's £683 painted!

£355 unpainted!

I have painted tanks myself before but haven't got  the equipment or necessary workshop availability at present!

Anyhow it was the length of a Manx Tank I initially need to identify.

I have put a shot of the tank I was interested in, but without the curvature of the Manx frame and the Clip-On indents.

Cheers

Hi John,

I guess you realise the tank in the picture is a combined petrol and oil tank.

Regards, Richard.

Hi,

Thanks, yes, it for a Norton-Imp road bike, which I suppose has slightly different criteria

If I can't fit enough oil in the central wet sump between the Feather-bed lower rails for the Imp engine, I can use it as an oil tank, if i can fit enough oil in the Central sump, I can perhaps have it as a reserve petrol tank, or even use it for a coolant tank depending on how much coolant I can fit in the system radiators and Water pump and pipes!

I was looking for a flexible approach to my liquid carrying needs!

Cheers

I have an alloy Manx style tank on my 650 SS Slimline. it measures 25 inches  front to rear. 14 at widest point and 10 at rear { knee position }. Hope this helps.

Approximate measures:

Manx -59, std 5 gallon, length 655 mm

ES2 in a -58 wideline 3 gallon, length 625 mm ( strap fits nice on  a short circuit tank)

650SS (slimline) standard tank, length 550 mm.

5 gallon UK-made alloy tank for the 650, length 650 mm (needs a new crosstube for the strap)

Thank you I have now kind  of put some measurements forward to a tank manufacturer, but I found this site  of an Italian manufacturer,  in Fibreglass with Metric measurements on it,  for a Wide-line of course!

But perhaps useful nonetheless!

Cheers
